What is a UPI?
UPI (Unified Payments Interface) is a very easy and secure way to transfer money via mobile phone in India. It was developed by NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India). It allows you to send money from your bank account to another person's or merchant's bank account instantly, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Its most important feature is that you don't need to repeatedly enter your bank account number, IFSC code, or card details to send money. A 'UPI ID' (e.g., name@upi) is created for you, which acts as a virtual address. You can connect all your bank branches to any app like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, or BHIM and make payments simply by scanning the person's mobile number, UPI ID, or QR code.
Making payments using UPI is not only fast but also very secure. Every time you make a transaction, you enter a secret 4- or 6-digit UPI PIN, which only you know. Once you enter this PIN, the money is deducted from one bank account and deposited directly into another within seconds.
What is a UPI QR Code?
A UPI QR Code is a square code (barcode) that greatly simplifies the process of digital money transactions. Whenever you purchase goods at a store, the black and white boxed sticker displayed for payment is called a UPI QR Code. Its biggest advantage is that you don't need to enter the person's mobile number or bank account details to make a payment.
The shopkeeper's UPI ID is hidden behind this code. When you scan this code with any payment app on your smartphone (such as Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, or BHIM), the app instantly identifies the person to whom the money is to be sent. Then, you simply enter the amount to be transferred and your secret 4- or 6-digit UPI PIN.
Upon entering the PIN, the money is immediately deducted from your bank account and deposited into the shopkeeper's or recipient's bank account. This method is not only very fast but also completely secure as your bank data is not shared with anyone and every payment cannot be completed without your PIN.
